On 10/22 5th Grade classes participated in the Launch Event for their new PBL Unit. We will be reading Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Students will be focusing on character traits, motivations, and how story elements interact. Collaborative groups will be adapting a scene from the book into a script. They will be acting out their scene, creating a scaled set model, and designing costumes and props. Students will have the opportunity to apply literacy and math standards as they explore theatre production.
To launch the project we took a backstage tour at Central High School. Central and Hale are putting on Tuck Everlasting the Musical which opens 11/15. We started on the stage where Mr. Pollard and Mr. Girmscheid demonstrated how some of the set elements work. We saw the boat that will be used and even a rising platform. Next we toured the dressing rooms and saw the backstage area. From there we got to see the prop and costume storage areas. We looked at where all electrical props and items are stored. Lastly Mr. Girmscheid showed us the light and sound boards! This was such a cool experience and a great way to dive into this unit. We'll be attending the production at Central this month!
