One of the essential elements of Project Based Learning is critique and revision. This process allows students the opportunity to develop skills in giving and receiving feedback. This year students have practiced giving constructive and respectful feedback. We often use a format of Praise-Question-Polish, where students can explain what is working in a peer's project, ask clarifying questions, and make suggestions on how the student or group can improve their work.
Students then use the given feedback to revise their work. This process can be repeated in order for students to create their best work.
When we introduced the concept of critique and revision to Team Odyssey we watched this inspiring video. This is about a 1st grader, Austin, who receives peer feedback and makes multiple revisions to create an amazing final product. Please watch!
As we prepare for Franklin's student showcase tomorrow students participated in a whole group critique and revision session. Students were asked to create a description of their model home features and why they included them for their display. Mrs. Rapp and I noticed that revision was needed on many of these and saw an opportunity for students to give and receive peer feedback. Students offered ideas on grammatical improvements, getting more specific, and adding missing information. Groups then collaborated to make revisions on their descriptions.
