Well we had quite the adventure getting to and from the Capitol today. We had a bus hiccup on the way there that delayed us (mechanical issues), but we made it for the tail end of our tour. Then we were met with another bus issue when ready to head back. Students were troopers and at least the group that had to wait had gorgeous weather.
While at the Capitol we got to see the Supreme Court, the Assembly Chamber, and the Senate Chamber and the work that is done in these spaces. We also learned about the art that can be found around the Capitol such as the rotunda mosaics, the Assembly mural, and the Senate panels. We heard the story of Old Abe the Assembly Eagle who was once an infantry mascot. We heard the story of the "ghost" paintings-the soldiers that were painted over to make room for a badger but now show through ever so slightly. We were treated to the music of a school orchestra as we entered and exited the rotunda.
While it was a quick visit due to unforeseen circumstances, students did get to experience the beauty of our Capitol building. Tours are given 7 days a week and I'd encourage anyone to take a more extensive tour if the opportunity presents himself.
When I returned with a select group from Mrs. Vollmer's class we tested what we learned on a Kahoot (online quiz game) that I created. Students enjoyed a little healthy competition and sharing what they'd learned.
Enjoy some pictures from the day below!
