Today Team Odyssey launched their new PBL Unit "Geometry and Art". They will be selecting an artist that uses geometric figures in their art and creating a biographical product about that person (an essay, a book, a poster, an electronic presentation, etc). They will also be creating a piece of art inspired by their artist. From there students will calculate perimeter, area, and volume of the figures in their piece. They will present (with the option of dressing up and acting as their artist) at the Franklin Showcase on May 9th. We will curate their pieces to display at Franklin for our school community to enjoy.
Today students participated in two launch activities. They took part in a "living gallery" walk. When they used the app HP Reveal (formerly Aurasma) to view images on posters, a video about that artist came up on their iPad (see video below). After viewing the posters and videos they recorded what they noticed and wondered about the artists, their work, their mediums, and their connections to math.
The second launch activity asked students to co-create a mural mosaic using geometric shaped pieces. This work fostered interesting conversation about how some students chose to create figures, others patterns, and some worked on abstract designs.
Students are excited to get going on another project. I can't wait to see their creations!
