Irving students working on the Literary Entrepreneurs PBL unit are at varying stages of their business creation and marketing. Some students are completeing their business webs and plans, while others are moving on to designing their websites. Learners will be using Google Sites to design a page that fits their business. They have looked at a variety of websites to determine features and information they want to include.

3rd Graders working on the PBL unit: Award Winning Travel Agent are also at varying stages within their vacation planning. Today we reviewed finding averages (mean, median, and mode). We found the average number of pets per household of our group. Students will be using the steps to find mean when they calculate average menu item cost for several restaurants. Riley and Gautham completely finished all of their calculations (flight, lodging, food, activities, and souvenirs) and have moved on to creating a Google Slides presentation to share their vacation proposal with their client. Students are utilizing multiplication, division, and are starting to interpret remainders as fractions to help them round.

4/5 collaborative groups are at a variety of stages within the Simple Machines Unit. We started today by discussing compound machines. Students were shown a variety of items such as a bicyle, wheelbarrow, and scissors. They needed to identify what simple machines made up that compound machine. They identified almost every single one correctly!
After that a number of groups went on to continue their Vex Kit builds of an inclined plane, lever, and pulley. Students who had completed these three models and documented their builds through photo and video moved on to augmented reality. They explored a variety of compound machines using augmented reality through Google Expeditions. Groups that had completed all of those tasks moved on to designing an original compound machine. First they identified what task or job their machine should be able to do. Next individuals sketched ideas. After that they shared ideas and decided if they would build one design or combine their designs. A few pairs moved on to building their compound machine. Eventually they will all design and build a complex machine that is able to rescue a tiger from a moat (with specific criteria for success).
Both 4/5 classes on Wednesday afternoon followed expectations, stayed on task and topic, and were able to earn free time at the end of their session. VR headsets a popular choice for free time!
