5th Graders in Ms. Deschane and Ms. Patnode's classes who have mastered the grade level skills for their current unit have moved on to working on 6th grade standards in the area of Number Systems. We have discussed integers on the number line, strategies for adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, absolute value, and opposites.
To connect integers to the real world students are participating in a Stock Market Challenge. They were given "$1000" to invest in 3-5 companies. We discussed how the stock market works, important data to pay attention to, and different public companies. Students could choose how to distribute they money between shares in different companies.
Students have now begun tracking and are fascinated by seeing trends in the market. They will track their daily losses and gains for two weeks then have the opportunity to reflect on their portfolio performance, buy, sell, and trade.
