Ms. Semrad's class has started a Project Based Learning Unit to help them explore multiplication, division, and how they connection to the real world. Students will be acting as travel agents and planning a trip for their client. We enlisted Ms. Karides's class to act as our clients.

First, students generated a list of questions they would need to ask their clients. They had to find out where there client wanted to go, how many people were traveling, how long they were going, type of hotels preferred, food they liked, activities they enjoyed, and more. Students will be calculating flight cost (using real world websites/prices), hotel cost, average menu item cost, souvenirs, and activities. They will take their clients preferences into consideration when selecting all of these items.

On the day pictured below, students paired up with their clients to receive answers to their questions. They took the task very seriously and acted as professionals.

When they have completed calculations and a proposal presentation they will meet with their clients again to present.

Several students in the class completed this project last year as part of an enrichment program. Those students will be doing a separate PBL unit where they are designing hotel. They will be working on operations with decimals within this unit. They need to select a location, determine size and number of rooms, amenities, create a mood board for interior design, then do a number of calculations related to their hotel design. They'll also be creating a blueprint, logo, and restaurant menu for their hotel. During client interview this groups explored Goolge Earth to get ideas for their hotel location.
