On Monday 46 students from across the district attended the annual Young Authors Conference, "Art of Writing", at the Milwaukee Art Museum. These students submitted applications at their school and were selected based on their writing samples and ability to represent our district in a positive manner.

The museum was closed to the public, so students had the entire space to themselves. They spent the morning touring the galleries in small groups and discussing the art. They talked about how the art made them feel, memories and experiences the pieces sparked, and even about the authors intentions. Their goal was to choose one piece that would inspire their personal narrative.

Student had a full hour to write after selecting their piece. Each group was assigned a beatiful gallery space to spend their time. What an inspiring place to dive into writing.

After lunch in the galleria, groups participated in feedback circles. Each student read their first draft and received feedback from the group. Students noted what was working, asked clarifying questions, and offered areas for polishing and improvement.

Students then worked on revisions based on feedback. Finally, they created their final draft. This will be published in a book distributed to all students that attended.

It was a great day and as always one of my favorite events of the year.
